06/02/09 CERT TEAM DRUG BUST Members of the Madison County Sheriff's Department C.E.R.T. team, along with the sheriff, three investigators, and Chief Todd Jennings of the Newman Grove Police Department served a "No Knock" search warrant at 114 S. 6th St. in Newman Grove. The search warrant was affected at approximately 1:30 p.m. without incident. A large amount of the named controlled substance was found. A concerned citizen provided the information on the presence of the controlled substance at the residence to Chief Jennings. It is greatly appreciated when the public takes initiative and cooperates with law enforcement. 06/02/09 LOCAL ABSCONDER FOUND Chief Jennings was contacted by the Nebraska Department of Corrections in Omaha in regards to an absconded inmate, Royce Steinbach, who was on furlough to his father's residence in Newman Grove. The department of corrections suspected he was at a different address than what he was released to. After checking a second address and the address listed the absconder was not located. Chief Jennings later located Steinbach in a vehicle in Newman Grove. Steinbach was given a set amount of time to return to the department of corrections by the Warden after he was released.
02/19/09 New Patrol Car Purchased
The Newman Grove Police Department has upgraded its patrol vehicle to a 2003 Chevy Impala Police Package. It was purchased from Federal Surplus, it had only 40,000 miles on it. Additionaly, a successful grant from the Nebraska Department of Highway Safety allowed for funding of a state of the art digital recording system. The system allows for crucial evidence to record 30 seconds prior to any traffic stop.
02/19/09 New City Pit Bull Rule
As of 2-19-09 the City Council passed an ordinance banning pit bulls and several other breeds deemed dangerous breeds by the American Kennel Association. Ordinances will be posted in the Public Library, Newspaper, and Post Office. Please contact Chief Jennings for further information.
03/04/08 Chief's Message to the Public
Since I have taken the position as Chief, I have used a community based policing philosophy. Meaning that I have encouraged the citizens to take a proactive stance in getting involved by addressing problems such as reporting any problems to law enforcement. No matter if it is criminal, health related issues, public nuisances, or traffic infractions concerning public safety. Therefore, I'm asking all citzens to get involved in coming up with a possible solution.
If there is a situation with a neighbor where it is possible to handle the parties involved, as long as everyone is civil and respect is maintained, the problem can probably be mediated.
I am the first to say, "If there is a neighborhood problem, it may be the best solution to handle it between neighbors." But as we know, that does not always work; sometimes law enforcement has to get involved. Maybe just as a mediator or sometimes taking more extreme measures are required.
In our community, the mayor, the city council and myself are always thinking of new ways to better the community.
Most recently we have been working on enacting a Problem Resolution Team. This would include getting the community involved in addressing community problems and coming up with a proactive solution. Not only criminal problems are the concern, but also it could be used to focus on other problems, like efforts to clean up unlicensed vehicles and run down properties.
I believe this team should include citizens, community leaders, and council members; not just law enforcement! We need the public's help.
I would appreciate any input, advice, or direction. Thank-you.
Next City Council meeting is 7:00 p.m. March 13th at the City Hall.
Sincerely,
Chief Todd Jennings
